Racist Assholes Predictably Take To Twitter After U.S. Defeat of Japanese Women's Soccer Team [Racism]

Unsurprising, but still BLERGHHH. Shortly after Nadeshiko Japan, the nation's women's soccer team, lost Thursday's game to the U.S. 2-1, the terms "Jap," "Pearl Harbor" and "Hiroshima" trended on the relentless shit soufflé that is Twitter. And why not? There's no better way to celebrate a victory than namecheck historical war tragedies (literally the opposite of the point of the Olympics uniting the nations of the world, by the way) that occurred at least 40 years before any of the players were even born, right? Right?

The tweets, some of which were collected on the Japan Daily Press, are largely along the lines of "That's for Pearl Harbor," but a few contain references to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. ("Haven't felt this good about beating Japan since..." et cetera.) "Long live the greatest country: America" adds one Twitter user— whose existence, ironically, is precisely what might make one question that statement. Go figure!

Last year was no better, apparently: when the Japanese women's soccer team took the World Cup against the U.S. in Germany, Japan Daily Press writer Adam Westlake remembers reading Tweets like: "Japan may have won the World Cup, but the U.S. scored the first two points with Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

So... yeah, WAY TO GO, racists! It's important to make every international event into an ugly and ignorant shitstorm.

Protest Erupts After New Hampshire Pub Tells Breastfeeding Woman to Holster Her Boobs [Breastfeeding]

Since New Hampshire protects public breastfeeding, it probably came as something of a shock to Hillsborough resident Jane Healy when the wait staff at Tooky Mills Pub (yet more proof that New Hampshire is the land of hobbits at heart) told her to cover up the exposed breast she was using to placate her hungry 10-month-old baby. The request offended Healy so much that she left the pub, and, Wednesday night, participated in a protest outside Tooky Mills meant, she says, "to just raise awareness" about the fact that publicly breastfeeding in New Hampshire is allowed and no awkwardly mumbling waiter can prevent an infant from enjoying a nice meal out of the house.

Healy was pretty offended when the Tooky Mills staff asked her to sheath her breast, so she left because only someone with a reptile hide could enjoy a meal after such a confrontation. Sean Burt, the owner of Tooky Mills, says that, while his staff certainly didn't mean "to upset or embarrass" Healy, it's the pub's responsibility to ensure that none of the Puritan ghosts roaming throughout New Hampshire accidentally see a boob in Tooky Mills and decide to haunt the pub forever.

Breastfeeding in public is protected by law in New Hampshire. Though Healy insists she isn't using the protest as a means of getting even with Tooky Mills for ruining her night out, she hopes to inform women that the state completely protects their right to breastfeed wherever their nursing infants start bawling for milk.

Adorable Cheetah Cubs Get Named After America's Fastest Olympians [Squee]

The pair of three-month-old cheetah cubs that — in all of their fuzzy, squeeful glory — have recently made their public debut at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. have finally been given names thanks to the fastest American sprinters at the 2012 Summer Olympics. The spotted duo will henceforth be known as Carmelita and Justin, as in Carmelita Jeter, who won silver in the women's 100m, clocking in at 10.78 seconds, and Justin Gatlin, who won bronze with a time of 9.79 seconds in the men's 100m.

We've done the conversions here at Jezebel HQ and have discovered — after hours of painstaking calculations — that having one baby cheetah named after you is worth approximately 1 million gold medals. Safe to say that Jeter and Gatlin are coming out of this as winners.

Megachurch Pastor & Author of Marriage Advice Books Fired After Getting Caught Making Out with Teenager [Holy Crap]

Jack Schaap, an Indiana megachurch pastor with a finely tuned Sincerity Face, has been fired after he was caught sincerely sucking face with a girl who was not his God-endorsed wife. The good news is that the girl appeared to consent to the makeout sesh. The super, extra gigantic bad news is that according to some sources, she's underage. God impregnated the Virgin Mary when she was, like, 14, so I don't understand what the big deal is here.

The 54-year-old Schaap was the head of First Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana, the 20th largest church by population in the US with a congregation of some 15,000 parishioners. He was busted just days ago, when a deacon at First Baptist retrieved Schaap's cell phone for him just in time to see a picture message arrive from Schaap's young paramour. The picture showed the two of them — the girl and the God guy — making out.

Schaap is married to the daughter of another megachurch pastor, and the two have two adult children. When he isn't preaching the word of God, he's writing marriage advice books. I swear I didn't make that up. Here's a sort of creepy passage from one called Divine Intimacy,

Maybe he wasn't wearing his glasses that day and, in his haze, he could have sworn the teenage girl was Jesus? IDK, maybe they have similar hairstyles and beards.

Texas Girls May Still Be in Detention After Using Fake Facebook Page to Bully Classmate [Bullying]

Two Texas girls accused of creating a fake Facebook page and impersonating a classmate were detained (and may still be detained) on July 16 and have been charged with online impersonation, a third degree felony. Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds has compared the Facebook impersonation to identity theft, which, he explained when the girls were first arrested, is typically used for "financial gain." "This [the alleged Facebook incident] was just to try and get back at a person," said Deeds, "and ruin them socially, so it's a big deal.

The girls, 12- and 13-years-old respectively, allegedly used the fake page to threaten people in their school, making it seem like their 12-year-old classmate was casting aspersions on her peers as wantonly as one might cast dandelion seeds about a meadow, or some other similarly open plane of land. The victim's parents reported the Facebook page to the sheriff's office back in June, before the suspects' identities had been sussed out by some diligent gumshoeing. When Sheriff Deeds figured out that the architects of the fake Facebook page were really the victim's frenemies, he supposed that there would be some sort of reconciliation. The victim's parents, however, having seen their daughter endure some Count of Monte Cristo shit, weren't so conciliatory.

Since Texas law shields juvenile court records, no one quite knows whether the girls have been released from the detention center they were being held in or not, though Chris Hansen from the ACLU (which isn't involved in the Hood County incident) told NBC that there has been a recent uptick in punishments for childern and teens harassing each other online. He also added that the girls' ages are a little "striking," and wondered whether it was totally on the level to treat people so young as adults, even if they had used the internet to make someone else's life miserable.

After Kickstarter success, Ouya CEO just getting started

Ouya, a $99 Android-based video game console, has picked up more than $5 million in the biggest Kickstarter campaign to date. It’s also received plenty of doubts from skeptics as well. In an interview, Julie Uhrman, the CEO and founder, said Ouya is the real deal.

Kickstarter’s records have been smashed by Ouya, a $99 Android-based video game console that promises to bring affordable games to the television. The project, which originally set out to raise $950,000, is now up to $5.7 million pledged from more than 47,000 backers with 10 left to go.

Built using standard components like a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and hackable, Ouya will create a new platform for developers looking to bring both casual and hardcore games to the living room. The console, which is being designed by famed designer Yves Behar, will work with a standard controller that includes a touchpad. Developers will be able to use an SDK to create an array of titles, which will all have a free component to them.

While the project isn’t expected to debut until March 2013, it has started revealing some partnerships, including a deal Friday with OnLive, which will offer its cloud-based streaming games at launch on Ouya. Ouya has also announced its first exclusive title Human Element, a zombie game from developer Robotoki.

I talked by phone last week with Ouya’s CEO and founder Julie Uhrman, who first conceived of Ouya while leading digital distribution and business development for gaming site IGN. We talked about the rising skepticism about the project and how Ouya is working to deliver the goods.

Ryan: Talk about the deal with OnLive. How did that come about and does that change the nature of your console?

Julie: There’s a lot of content and games that we want for Ouya and we listen to our audience. They wanted OnLive so I made it a point to go out get them. OnLive signals some of the types of partnerships we can have on Ouya. The idea is we can have streaming and downloadable content. Because it’s open and built on Android, all different kinds of content would be available: games, videos, streaming and music content. Ouya is about being open and bringing the best content to gamers and anyone who enjoys entertainment. We don’t think OnLive’s content cancels out any publishers or developers, it enhances the platform.

Ryan: Some people are skeptical of Ouya and wonder if it will pan out. Will this project deliver on time?

Julie: We have every confidence that we will do this. The technology isn’t rocket science, it’s standard stuff combined in a new way and wrapped in a beautiful package. It’s been incredibly embraced by gamers and developers. We get hundreds of emails from developers wanting to develop for the platform; the idea of openness of Ouya has resonated. Until we have things on store shelves, we can’t prove things and there will be questions but most (developers) say they want Ouya or something like this to succeed. We have vetted our process, capped the amount of units we are shipping on day one and we have great advisors, who have built great hardware and software. We feel very confident we will deliver in March.

Ryan: So where did this idea come from? What was your vision?

Julie: I was part of the game industry for a long time and I saw AAA developers leaving for mobile. But if you interview gamers, the number one platform is the TV. The most time is spent in the living room, even for mobile games. The experience is better on a TV but all the excitement and growth was in mobile. I grew up on TV games and I wanted to bring it back and I saw an opportunity for a device that has Android as its operating system. The value proposition is there. People don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on a console. Ouya is $99 and games are free to play. What’s not to like?

Ryan: But building an ecosystem is hard work. Trying to court and keep developers and convince them there’s money to be made here is not easy. What are you planning to do to ensure that Ouya is appealing to developers?

Julie: The one thing that is always important to remember is this is still a product in development. We are focused on creating a great product. Kickstarter is opening up a two-way dialogue with folks who will benefit and we’re incorporating their feedback. People are incredibly excited. The developer conversations are incredibly well. You aint seen nothing yet.

Ryan: What has Kickstarter meant to you and what does the added money allow you to do?

Julie: It’s been a phenomenal platform for us and allowed us to create a dialogue with an audience of gamers and developers. We knew this was the only way to get to market quickly, raise money and bring this idea to fruition. Our goal was to hit $950,000 and we knew we could deliver units and even provide tools and support for developers with that. Anything over that is truly unbelievable and it means we can build more tools.
