Bronx Assemblywoman’s Facebook Page Inspires a Spirited Round of Slut-Shaming [Facebook]

Bronx Assemblywomanâ??s Facebook Page Inspires a Spirited Round of Slut-ShamingThe Post today published a gleeful takedown of Bronx Assemblywoman Naomi D. Rivera's private Facebook page, which, featured (until Rivera recently took the page down) a picture of the assemblywoman with her bra exposed. Much slut-shaming ensued, and, though Gothamist's Ben Yakas rightly points out that Rivera's relationship with a staffer named Tommy Torres probably merits further scrutiny, the Post dances merrily along the slut-shaming line, calling Rivera "a real swing voter" and criticizing her "lacy red bra."

It's not that Rivera Facebook page isn't worth investigating — though she's said that the page is her "personal page" and has therefore asked the press to respect her privacy, no public figure should expect that their social networking minutiae to be protected under an unspoken "hands-off" policy. Besides, Rivera's page featured a series of pictures of her with Torres dating back to 2009 (a year before Rivera finalized a divorce with her then-husband), when she first created the private Facebook account under the name "Daniela," according to the Post. Torres started working out of Rivera's office in 2010, earning an $18,123 "taxpayer-funded salary." Torres is later listed by the state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli as working full-time for Rivera from Aug. 30, 2010, to June 1, 2011, during which time he had another full-time job, according to the Department of Education, at Brooklyn's PS 157.

Pictures on the Facebook profile showed a whole series of Torres and Rivera doing the sorts of things couples tend to do: Rivera flashing a pair of 1-carat diamond earrings Torres bought her for Valentine's Day; Torres and Rivera dancing, dirtily; Torres and Rivera at a baseball game, fighting the urge to nap through the entire boring spectacle of watching the Mets lose. It isn't that Rivera should somehow be above public scrutiny — her internet travails should be media fodder the same as any other politician's, more so if, as the Post suggests, there was anything improper about her relationship with a paid staffer.

Still, there's a pretty stark difference between criticizing an improper work relationship, and criticizing an adult woman, public figure or not, for having the audacity to sleep with whomever she wants. The Post toes the slut-shaming line because it's easy enough to strafe onto the scene, make a "swing voter" joke, and feel justified in lampooning a politician for making the same mistake other politicians have — being stupid on the internet. Thus far, that's really the only thing that Rivera deserves to be criticized for.

If You're Not on Facebook, You're Probably A Sociopath [Social Media]

If You're Not on Facebook, You're Probably A Sociopath

Back in the day (and by "day" we mean circa 2010?), you had to be careful about having a Facebook account under your real name, lest potential employers judge you by the number of red Solo cups in your profile pics. Now, it seems that employers are suspicious if you don't have a Facebook because your lack of virtual know-how signifies that you're "abnormal" — or, that you're hiding it because of the number of red Solo cups in your profile pics.

Psychologists also see abstaining from social media as a warning sign. "The Internet has become a natural part of life," psychologist Christopher Moeller told Germany's Der Taggspiegel. "It's possible that you get feelings of positive feedback through online friends." The magazine notes that both suspected Aurora theater gunman James Holmes and Norwegian massacre shooter Anders Behring Breivik lacked Facebook accounts, and implies it's equally "possible" that not having a Facebook means you're not only social inept but a murderer.

I, personally, am suspicious when I meet someone who doesn't have a Facebook because it usually means that person is desperate to be part of the counterculture and I have to prepare myself to hear a pretentious rant about how he doesn't even own a smartphone, either. BIG WHOOP. Look, we all know Facebook's privacy settings are evil and that, sometime over the next decade, Mark Zuckerburg will probably come up with a way to secretly implant non-optional minifeeds in our brain. Whatever. Every single person I know who doesn't have an account — and I can count them on one hand — secretly goes on their friend's Facebooks to stalk their exes, anyway.

Facebook Is a Great Place to Network with People Who Don't Exist [Facebook]

Facebook Is a Great Place to Network with People Who Don't ExistThe other week, I got a random Facebook friend request from a suspiciously modelesque shirtless dude who sent me a message that read "I wish to accept friendship." We had no friends in common. My coworker Dodai got a similar request with the same message but from a totally different person. Were we among the chosen few humans who were among the first to be contacted by a small race of self-aware robots who existed only as Facebook pages? Nope— turns out, fake Facebook profiles are incredibly common. How common? Try 83 million common.

According to The Guardian, today, Facebook admitted that four score million and three million of the massive social network's users aren't actually people — that's 8.7% of the site's entire user base. Fake profiles belong to people's pets, duplicate profiles that paranoid people maintain in case a future employer asks for their social networking password, miscategorized pages for businesses and other non-human entities, and 14 million accounts that exist solely to spam people. The surprisingly unsurprising numbers were revealed in the company's first quarterly report to investors. Its stock is currently worth about 20 bucks a pop on the market, down from a $38 initial offering price. Buy buy buy! (That's a joke joke joke).

So the next time you get a weird rando friend request from someone hoping to give you TRIPLE FRIENDSHIP HAPPINESS, just ignore it. They just want to phish information from your account and blitz your inbox with offers for f R$ee vIa g r @.

Facebook Jerks Want to 'Beat the Shit' Out of Teresa Giudice's 5-Year-Old Daughter [Real Housewives]

Jul 31, 2012 4:30 PM

Facebook Jerks Want to 'Beat the Shit' Out of Teresa Giudice's 5-Year-Old DaughterIt began innocuously enough on Monday when someone from Bravo posted picture of Milania Giudice to The Real Houswives of New Jersey Facebook page asking fans of the reality show to "share" if they missed Teresa's daughter, who was absent from the most recent episode. It has since devolved into a mess of nearly 1200 comments talking shit on the little girl's personality and appearance, calling her names like "bitch" and "troll," and more disturbingly, many users expressed their desire to physically harm her. She's five.

The craziest thing about the vicious comments is that they aren't anonymous. People's real names and pictures are directly connected to the disgusting things they've said about a child. It makes it all so much more absurd and senseless. Here, I'd always thought that the more hateful comments on the Internet were made by angry, ignorant young people who have nothing better to do with their time. Evidently, that's not true! Case in point, Linda L Goolsby, a grandmother of seven, is not above calling a child ugly:

there is nothing cute about her, she is ugly inside and out. she has the worst mother and father there ever is.

Then there's 50-ish Angie Costillo, who isn't afraid of going on the record about child abuse:

Now thats one little girl I would love to put over my knees and whip the shit out of! I know I'll get some flack from that comment but come on people those kids have no RESPECT thanks to their parents. Their parents could use an ass whipping as well!

Of course, many shared Angie's opinion of corporal punishment.

Betty Harris-Stokes: you need a real good spanking !!
Irene Neill Cassata: cute dress, but the kid needs a smack and manners!
Casey Fusco: Ewww she needs a slap! Brat!
Deanna DeStefano Hummel: Your kids need an ass whooping they are disrespectful brats wait the apple never falls to far from the tree or in this case "Tre"

Shirley Shir-li Friedman appears to be a mother of a child who is roughly Milania's age, but this hasn't softened her opinion of the little girl:

Oh and...yeah the girl's ugly as a toad and does not have one ounce of cuteness from he coarse hair that has been flattened to her rough voice. No, no, make her go a way to her grandma is sicily or something.

Plenty others joined in with her.

Eric Lambert: gross, not cute at all!
Jenn Duivenvoorde: I think she needs a brow wax!
Blackie Gandy: I don't like them bugged eyed mosquito flies
Jana Bellar McElhaney: Not a cute kid at all poor thing
Walter Remick: I feel bad for the kid, she has her mother's hairline.
Heidi Boucher: whats wrong with her legs!lol
Justice Peace: The ugly little evil abusive strange looking troll..she has to be the schools' bully.

And then there were those that stuck with good old fashioned name calling.

Tango Lima: lil bitch.
Anna Colelli Bradley: She's a little shit!
Brian K. Frontuto: this kid is spoiled ROTTEN and is about as bright as the mother and headed for a tough life with spoiled ways.
Tanya Wynn: The Guidice girls are going to be just like the Kardashian clan. A bunch of people getting famous for doing absolutely nothing. And Teresa is just like Kris Kardashian pimping her kids for money. Guess we have another scripted sex tape coming.
Diana Caporale: I never thought I would say this in my LIFETIME, but I absolutely HATE this little girl!!! BIGGEST BRAT ON BRAVO!!!!!
Amber Russell: Does anyone else find it ironic that the two who resemble Teresa the most, Gia and Milania, are absolute psychotic brats!!!! Teresa needs her tubes tied... actually, she should've had them tied the day Joe proposed to her. One of the most horrible families I have ever seen!!!

And in case you thought any of this commentary was too harsh for a five-year-old little girl, Candace Marie Kelloren explains why it's actually OK:

For those saying let's not forget she;s a child, let's not forget that she is an ABUSIVE child and beats her sisters. So save the sympathy card because she is a CHILD ABUSER.

You see, Milania asked for it!

Texas Girls May Still Be in Detention After Using Fake Facebook Page to Bully Classmate [Bullying]

Texas Girls May Still Be in Detention After Using Fake Facebook Page to Bully ClassmateTwo Texas girls accused of creating a fake Facebook page and impersonating a classmate were detained (and may still be detained) on July 16 and have been charged with online impersonation, a third degree felony. Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds has compared the Facebook impersonation to identity theft, which, he explained when the girls were first arrested, is typically used for "financial gain." "This [the alleged Facebook incident] was just to try and get back at a person," said Deeds, "and ruin them socially, so it's a big deal.

The girls, 12- and 13-years-old respectively, allegedly used the fake page to threaten people in their school, making it seem like their 12-year-old classmate was casting aspersions on her peers as wantonly as one might cast dandelion seeds about a meadow, or some other similarly open plane of land. The victim's parents reported the Facebook page to the sheriff's office back in June, before the suspects' identities had been sussed out by some diligent gumshoeing. When Sheriff Deeds figured out that the architects of the fake Facebook page were really the victim's frenemies, he supposed that there would be some sort of reconciliation. The victim's parents, however, having seen their daughter endure some Count of Monte Cristo shit, weren't so conciliatory.

Since Texas law shields juvenile court records, no one quite knows whether the girls have been released from the detention center they were being held in or not, though Chris Hansen from the ACLU (which isn't involved in the Hood County incident) told NBC that there has been a recent uptick in punishments for childern and teens harassing each other online. He also added that the girls' ages are a little "striking," and wondered whether it was totally on the level to treat people so young as adults, even if they had used the internet to make someone else's life miserable.

Later Bro is an application that lets your schedule your statuses both in Facebook and Twitter for a later time.

Kind of useful when you want to update your statuses when you are going to be away for a while.

Another option is to use Status Symbols, which is an app on Facebook. You can use images, smileys or upload your own image. You create your status from the app itself, similar to Status Magic. It’s quick and easy to use.
