Racist Assholes Predictably Take To Twitter After U.S. Defeat of Japanese Women's Soccer Team [Racism]

Unsurprising, but still BLERGHHH. Shortly after Nadeshiko Japan, the nation's women's soccer team, lost Thursday's game to the U.S. 2-1, the terms "Jap," "Pearl Harbor" and "Hiroshima" trended on the relentless shit soufflé that is Twitter. And why not? There's no better way to celebrate a victory than namecheck historical war tragedies (literally the opposite of the point of the Olympics uniting the nations of the world, by the way) that occurred at least 40 years before any of the players were even born, right? Right?

The tweets, some of which were collected on the Japan Daily Press, are largely along the lines of "That's for Pearl Harbor," but a few contain references to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. ("Haven't felt this good about beating Japan since..." et cetera.) "Long live the greatest country: America" adds one Twitter user— whose existence, ironically, is precisely what might make one question that statement. Go figure!

Last year was no better, apparently: when the Japanese women's soccer team took the World Cup against the U.S. in Germany, Japan Daily Press writer Adam Westlake remembers reading Tweets like: "Japan may have won the World Cup, but the U.S. scored the first two points with Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

So... yeah, WAY TO GO, racists! It's important to make every international event into an ugly and ignorant shitstorm.

Hope Solo Goes on a Twitter Rant About Commentator Brandi Chastain’s Soccer Ignorance [Notable/quotable]

Noted libertine and soccer player Hope Solo took issue with the way soccer commentator Brandi Chastain criticized the U.S. Women's soccer team's apparently porous defense. Solo did what all vociferous famous people do when they need a suitable podium for their outrage — she fired-off a series of scathing tweets, the first of which was meant to illustrate just how little Chastain knows about modern soccer:

Lay off commenting about defending and [goalkeeping] until you get more educated @brandichastain the game has changed from a decade ago.

There's nothing a former athlete hates more than being reminded that the times have a-changed, but Solo didn't stop there. She continued with a justification for her anger:

It's important 2 our fans 2 enjoy the spirit of the olympics. It's not possible when sum1 on air is saying that a player is the worst defender!

Finally, Solo insinuated that Chastain was part of the reason that soccer isn't all that popular amongst American TV audiences:

I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute, especially bc @arlowhiteis fantastic. @brandichastain should be helping 2 grow the sport.

After meeting today with team captain Amy Wambach, Solo tweeted again that everything is just fine with Team U.S.A. and that all the fretting ESPN commentators shouldn't worry their little hearts — she won't be missing any game time. For her part, Chastain, one of the most accomplished players in U.S. soccer history, didn't engage with Solo, thereby restoring national unity to the Olympic endeavor of winning as many baubles as possible.
