Skype with Video Chat APK Available to Try on Other Devices

Skype without video chat seemed a bit absurd to me honestly, but yesterday Skype finally brought it to a few Android devices. Well developers aren’t just going to sit around and let four phones have all the fun! A version of the apk has been modified and is now up for download which is working on additional devices.

It turns out that the app itself simply had an array of devices that it was allowed to run on. The developer pulser saw that Skype wouldn’t let him video chat on his Galaxy S II, and wouldn’t have any of it. He has now published an APK which has the restriction removed.

It is important to note that just because the app will not refuse to work on your phone because of this fix, it is NOT guaranteed that it won’t be buggy, or simply force close on your particular phone. There are several devices that have reported it working though including the EVO 3D EVO 4G, Galaxy S and Galaxy S II.

There is no centralized database yet, and the reports coming in are only single cases, so custom ROMs and other modifications could alter success. For now the only way to see if it will work is to download the apk, install it and hope for the best. Follow the instructions below and let us know what phone you have and if it works or not.

1) Download the apk here. (Preferably from on your phone)

1b) Move the apk to your phone’s internal storage or SD card if you didn’t download it straight to your phone.

2) Click on the apk either in downloads, or wherever you moved it to (You will need a file manager to do this).

3) Try it out and let us know how it works!

HTC EVO 3D and Sensation 4G Temp-Root Available

Those developers over at XDA and other popular development communities are at it again working hard to bring us the things we need, things like temp-root for the HTC EVO 3D and the Sensation 4G. Earlier the group TeamWin found an exploit and were able to achieve root access. Now those nice guys are letting everyone else join in on the fun while they keep working.

Agrabren is the man behind much of the work that has been accomplished over the last few days to get temp-root and now he has posted a little user guide for those that would like to do the same. This is only temp-root so the device will not stay rooted for long, after a random amount of time or a reboot you will lose root. They are still working to get this all figured out but for now it is a work in progress.

They have a small root utility they are calling Fre3vo to help you out and you can download that by clicking here. This is not the easiest task and for those new to adb or to rooting devices you should probably wait for an easier and full root method before trying anything crazy. I know some out there are excited to try so I figured I’d share the news anyways.

Instructions:

Download Fre3vo

1. You must be able to push files via adb to your device.

2. You must know what a shell is.

then

1. Download the fre3vo binary

2. Push the binary via ‘adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp’

3. Change the permissions via ‘adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo’

4. Run the binary via ‘adb shell /data/local/tmp/fre3vo’

If all goes well, you’ll be told that adbd has been killed.

run ‘adb shell’ and you should have a ‘#’ prompt instead of ‘%’.

Again, this is only temporary root and if you reboot the device you will lose root access. They are also reporting it randomly losing root as well without a reboot so this is still very new and under developement. Try if you would like but take extreme caution and remember you are responsible for what you do, and not anyone else. Users at XDA are reporting apps like Titanium Backup are not working at first but with some tweaking they are able to run fine. When more details emerge or a better root tool we will update accordingly. Hopefully S-OFF is coming soon and enjoy your Holiday weekend everyone.

Slide Screen 2 beta 10 – available for download!

There are quite a few home replacement options available for your Android phone. But, have you tried Slide Screen? Slide Screen, from Larva Labs takes a radical approach to Android home screen.

Slide Screen 2 beta 10 download available

When you wake up the phone, you see the latest information from all of the sources, starting from missed calls, calendar entries, messages, mails to Facebook, Twitter and Google reader updates. Yes, all in one screen, where the center bar with cell and weather information slides up and down. Another notable, well thought off feature is that the phone and message bars hide themselves when there’s nothing to notify – no new message or missed call.

After using Slide Screen, I’m no more missing the multiple home screens with widget functionalities. Well, it’s a matter of personal taste. People who are used to the iPhone interface will say “this looks cramped!”. I prefer to move away from the usual, how-so-boring home screens.

Though the development is slow, with no major feature updates during the past 4 months, Slide Screen looks promising. Refreshing too! Should look very good on Android phones with full black panel finish.
